Chinese Academy of Forestry

Facts and Figures
Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF) is China’s national comprehensive forest research institution of multiple disciplines for public benefits. Its research fields range from forest-related applied basic science and strategic high technology research to researches, technological explorations and soft science for great social and public benefits.

CAF is dedicated to solving the major scientific issues bearing overall, comprehensive, critical and fundamental influences on forest development and ecology construction.

The Academy is affiliated to State Administration of Forestry and Grassland with 19 research institutes and centers, 13 non-independent legal entities and 21 associated institutions. The total employment at CAF is 3,218, among which, 6 Academicians (the highest domestic academic title ) , 1 member of the National Committee of the CPPCC, 1 counselor to the State Council, 3 professionals are listed as the National Outstanding Professional Talents. 10 professional have been awarded the National High-level Talents Special Support Program (also known as the Ten Thousand Talents Plan) are included in the National Hundred and Ten Thousand Talented Personnel Program, 4 professionals have enjoyed the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and 5 the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, together with 900 senior research title holders.

Scientific Research
Chinese Academy of Forestry is actively involved in national key scientific projects. Remarkable progress has been made in genetic improvements, forest silviculture, forest ecology and environment, desertification control, forest protection and conservation, forest resource management, wood and wood processing and utilization, forest products chemical processing and utilization, forestry machinery and forest development strategies and policies. CAF provides strong support for national key strategic planning including national ecological civilization, timber security and forest city construction.

Ever since the foundation in 1958, CAF has won round 1900 scientific achievements with over 540 achievements being awarded provincial or above level prizes. These prizes include but are not limited to the following: 1 Platinum Prize (even superior to the first prize) Progress Award, 4 First Prizes and 40 Second Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award by the State Council; 1 Natural Science Award and 3 Science Innovation Second Prizes. CAF professionals have authored more than 12,000 papers and 570 books.

For the facilities and platforms, CAF boasts 1 key national open lab in partnership with Northeast Forestry University (the only one on forest in China). It also owns the first National Forest Alliance----the Wood and Bamboo Industry Technological Innovative Strategic Alliance. 1 National Engineering Lab, 2 National Engineering Technique Center, 4 National Forest Experimental Bases, 3 National Terrestrial Ecosystem Positioning Observation Stations, 10 Genetic Plasmas Banks, and 6 Ministerial Natural Reserves.

Education
Chinese Academy of Forestry has carried out post-graduate education ever since 1979 among the initial institutions being able to confer master and PhD degrees.

Thanks to the 30 years development, with the 2002 Postgraduate School establishment approved by SFA in particular, CAF’s post-graduate education has seen a rapid progress in teaching facilities, subject construction, and faculty capacity and students enrollment.

Currently, CAF covers 4 discipline categories, namely: sciences, engineering, agronomy and management with 3 first grade doctor disciplines, 7 first grade master disciplines, and 3 post-doctor stations. 1 discipline is listed as Beijing Municipal Major Discipline, 4 disciplines are listed as SFA First-grade Major Discipline and 14 as Second-grade Major Discipline.

CAF has158 doctor supervisors and 235 master supervisors with a full student enrollment of 1200, 900 of which are full-time post-graduate students. The total graduated students number has reached up to 300 more, a great talent contribution to China forest development and ecological construction.

In addition, CAF has successively conferred numerous world well-known experts either as CAF’s honorary professors or honorary doctors or research fellows. In 2002 and 2005 CAF has conferred honorable doctor degrees to the Finish President H.E. Tarja Halonen and the Brazilian Environment Minister H.E. Marina Silva respectively.

International Cooperation
CAF has established close cooperation with more than 58 countries and 57 international organizations through various channels, in numerous forms and in comprehensive aspects. 105 MOUs have been inked with international organizations, forest research institutions, universities, enterprises and government sectors. Through CAF’s recommendation, 14 international cooperation partners have been awarded Chinese Government Friendship Awards, 2 partners been conferred China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award.

The recent years’ cooperation between CAF and CEECs has seen growth in leaps and bounds, with that of Slovenia, Slovak, Romania, Hungary and Latvia and Czech Republic as the highlights. 3 MOUs have been inked and a number of international cooperation projects have been put into force. Recommended by CAF, the president of Transylvania University of Brasov, Romania has won the Friendship Award.

As of today, 89 CAF experts are holding positions in the international organizations. CAF is an active participant in IUFRO organized world forest congress or other international forest congresses. The numerous sessions and side meetings organized by CAF has profoundly showcased CAF’s expertise and notably elevated CAF’s international influence.

CAF is also active in hosting, organizing or co-organizing international conferences and training workshops. The IUFRO-AO 2016 Asia- Pacific Regional Conference is a landmark event in this regard, with more than 1,000 participants be they forest researchers, managers, policy makers, entrepreneurs or forest practitioners from more than 60 countries attending the conference, it is truly the most magnificent event of this kind in China in forest field.

To echo the Belt and Road Initiative forest science and technology cooperation and the China-CEECs Action Plan for Coordination Mechanism for the Cooperation in Forestry, CAF has embarked on China-CEECs forest research cooperation and engaged in part of the work in the coordination mechanism which has further defined China-CEECs future cooperation direction and approaches and explored the possibilities of establishing a win-win cooperation platform.

In 2017, CAF hosted the 1st International Conference on China-CEECs Forestry Research and Education Cooperation with more than 200 participants from home and abroad, the conference was a great success in pooling talents on China-CEECs forestry cooperation.

The conference has touched upon the forestry science and technology, scientific research and development, education and people-to-people exchange and culminated with five prioritized fields: forest silviculture, forest ecology, environmental protection, forest monitoring and assessment and forest bio economy to set up a cooperation network and jointly tap the education and training potential.
